If a casualty requires handover to further care, then ensuring that the handover is efficient and complete is critical to ensure that the casualty can get on their way to further care quickly. One way to do this, is to use a well known standard format. Some organisations may simply follow the “ABCDE” of the primary survey and detail what was found during each stage, however a very common handover format is the “ATMIST”.
A Age of Casualty
Key details of the identity of the casualty, including at least their name – but potentially also their name, date of birth, and gender.
T Time of Incident
The time of the incident or onset of symptoms. Also record the time that you arrived
M Mechanism of Injury
How did the injury occur? Also include any known factors. For example, was this a crash, a stabbing, or a fall? Include details such as entrapment, rollover, or if they were ejected from a vehicle.
I Injuries
Any injuries discovered by the primary survey and any injuries suspected.
S Signs and Symptoms
Include any initial signs and symptoms and whether they have improved or deteriorated since responders arrived. Additionally, include any vital signs that you have been able to monitor (e.g. respiratory rate, SPo2, blood glucose, AVPU or GCS).
T Treatment Given
Any treatment given, including the time and dose/rate.
